Tips for a Successful NO SPEND MONTH!

One of the things I have been wanting to change for a few years now is the way I spend.  I've mentioned in a previous post that the clutter has really gotten to me in my home- but it's all my doing. Honestly I have no one to blame but myself- unless you want to blame the YouTuber's my kid's watch that makes us go to Target to get the newest and greatest thing! Nah- I still blame myself!

Part of our New Year's plan was to change all the flooring in our house, and what perfect timing to declutter and minimize all the "stuff" we have accumulating in every nook and cranny of my house.  I've always envisioned my house being ones you see so clean and tidy on IG or Pinterest, but I'm going to keep it real, it isn't anywhere close to that! Why am I bringing this up? Because it is part of my mindful change in the way I spend money.

For the month of January (I have to start real slow), my family and I are going to partake in a NO SPEND MONTH. I've read a ton of blog's and Pinterest posts about tackling this, but I have to say, this is by far the best way to get us to not spend money and start saving our hard earned cash (which means more travel and funds to make memories!)

Before you start the No Spend Month, you have to be a bit realistic about your goals and how you are going to accomplish this. We decided to compile a list of what we can spend on.

  1. Food- Obviously. However, we can't just go willy-nilly on anything food. I will be meal planning weekly (that way we don't waste any food) and we will not be buying anything frivolous (although my husband is allowed to get a can (two max!) of beer every weekend since it helps his sanity after a long work week!)
  2. Eating Out- This is an absolute NO-NO. After going over expenses the past few months we spent, on average, $1000/month on eating out!!! How is that possible? You want to know? Doordash and my lazy butt! They have made the ability to be lazy and be fed so easy that it cost me an arm and a leg! So, although eating out is definitely a NO-NO in January, like I said, I need to be a bit realistic and give ourselves some grace. Our lives are super hectic with full time jobs and 2 young kids that we are allowing ONE dinner out under $25 for the month of January. However, once it is used up- it's done! That way it will help us be more mindful with using that one freebie of dining out.
  3. The regular monthly expenditures that can't be ignored- gas, bills, anything medical (co-payments if we need to see the doctor, medicine, anything school related that is a necessity (which means I can't keep volunteering to pick things up for the class!), pet related necessities and anything home related that needs to be fixed or repaired. (Yes, we are getting our floors done, but everything has pretty much been prepaid. So, if we have any expenses we incur with our floors, it has to be absolutely needed sort of thing- or our floors don't get done).
This definitely will not be easy. I'm an avid Target and Amazon shopping Starbucks kind of gal. I also like to have my nails look pretty and manicured. But I have my bigger "WHY" and in order to get closer to it, I have to make some changes and try my very best to adhere to it.

Necessities can be pretty vague. Everyone's necessities are different and everyone's needs are unique. This is what works for us. I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but if you compile a list and ensure that your necessities is met with a little bit of grace to be able to make that change, then you will be successful.  I've learned that too much change too soon can actually hinder an individual from successfully making that change. This is a good step in the right direction. From here, we learn from it and then we can alter it to meet our February goals (because I'm sure I missed something)!

Kind of cliche right?  I've been making New Year's Resolutions every single year for as long as I can remember. Do I ever hit any of them- rarely. Not from a lack of trying, but more because things just get in the way, laziness strikes, and my old ways set in.

This year is going to be different. 2019 will mark my 4th year since being diagnosed with breast cancer. This year I am adamant to not let the nasty cancer voice take over my life. If you or someone you know has ever gone through cancer, you'll understand what I mean! This year though, I plan to stick to my goals and crush them! Any changes that bring me closer to any of my goals I will deem successful!

2019 is all about a healthier me! Healthier body, mind and soul. If I can do everything in my power to make sure I live a healthier lifestyle, I'll be one step closer to ensure the big C won't be rearing her ugly head!  Some of the changes I'll be working on and documenting are:

  • Healthier body- My body has forgotten what it's like to be active. Being bed ridden off and on for over 6 years (difficulty pregnancy with baby #1), I get winded just carrying one of my kids up the stairs. And although I just turned 40, if someone like Jennifer Lopez or Cameron Diaz (who are both older than me) can stay in phenomenal shape and look great at their age, then I've got something to look forward to! Plus- Jack (the hubs) and Krys (my unbiological daughter) signed me up for a Spartan-like race in June... time to hit get into shape!
  • Healthier diet- This goes in part with a healthier body. I honestly believe that it doesn't really matter so much as how active you are, but at the end of the day, it's what you are putting into your body. I used to be a HUGE sweets and meat eater. Since getting BC, I have cut down my sweets and meat intake (don't get me wrong, I will have a few Ferrero Roche and some cookies, but I do limit it!) I'm not where I want to be with my diet, so I'll be documenting the changes I make as well!  Besides, if I eat healthy (and since I do the majority of the cooking- my family will too!)
  • Healthier mind-  For the past few months I've been getting a ton of anxiety and felt restless with how much clutter there is in my home. I've read a ton of books on decluttering, used Pinterest like crazy to find ideas and solutions, but in actuality, I just need to get started and power through. Less "stuff", whether it is in my closet, in the kid's room/playroom, or even on my calendar will ease the amount of anxiety and tension I have from so much "build up".
  • Healthier soul-  I am a Christian. I love Jesus. I want my kids to love and seek Jesus. But I'm such a hypocrite because I don't lead by example. After our church had a big separation many many years ago, it was difficult for our family to find another church home. Since then, we've been jumping back and forth between churches without giving an opportunity for our kids to dig their feet in. This year, more than anything else, we are putting God first. I know if I do this, everything will fall into place.
Some other things I want to accomplish in 2019 is to continue building my business and help others along the way, travel and build more experiences/memories, and continue to build deep and meaningful relationships with those that want to. I'm no longer going to force relationships, run after friendships, or ponder over people and their time.

Life is too short, let's make the best of it in the next 12 months! If we are able to make the slightest changes towards our goal- then we would definitely be living our best life yet!

Europe in 7 days with 2 kids Part II

Now onto London.

You have to purchase your tickets in advance to get onto the Euro Star, and this is the BEST way to travel to London from Paris. I made the mistake of purchasing our tickets a week before our trip, the tickets for a party of 3 (with a lap kid) was almost $700.00.  When I checked a month prior, it was only going to cost us less than $200 round trip. BIG difference! Lesson learned. Don't make the same mistake I did!

Besides your ticket, you need to arrive at least 45 minutes to an hour before your train leaves. There is a long line to get through Customs (forms need to be filled out) and through baggage security. If you are traveling with lots of bags like we were, be prepared! The train we took was the newer model, with automatic sliding doors within the cabins, and more luxurious seats. There is food on board, but selection is minimal. After a little over 2 hours, we arrived in London with an extra hour to spare (time change!).  We arrived at St Pancras terminal in London where all metro, trains, subway, you name it flows through.  This station is very different from Paris- bigger, busier. Once you get out of the train and make your way out to either the Underground or the buses, make sure you get an Oyster card. You have to scan your card at every entrance and exit (or you will get fined). The hubs put the daily maximum on our cards which allowed us unlimited usage for only 7 Pounds.

After a quick train ride from the station, we met a very sweet lady that helped us with our bags, stroller, and to find the double decker red bus.  People in London are so much nicer than Paris! We got to our hotel and the nice lady who checked us in gave the girls a little stuffed animal.

Day 4 - arrive in London via Euro Star. Check in at hotel Novotel Waterloo, same hotel chain as the first hotel we stayed at, but a bit nicer.  We walked to grab breakfast at a cute little spot called The Queen's Cafe. Delicious! The girls shared a dish with eggs and beans (weird but it was good), the Hubs had something delicious that I can't really recall because I had the eggs benedict and it was amazing!  Madison was awake at least to have something to eat, but fell asleep on our walk to Kensington Palace.  The LONG walk from the Metro (Google Maps let us out a little too!) to Kensington Palace was freezing and so windy.  We finally made it to the Palace and did the tour. We woke up the Nocturnal baby and both kids enjoyed walking through the castle and exploring! One of our favorite spots of the tour was a exhibition of Princess Diana's dresses. WOW. The girls just wanted to snap a photo in front of every single one. The history in that place is just awe-inspiring. Luckily I was all caught up on Netflix Original Show, The Crown, to understand a little bit of history! We ended the tour in the cafe and the girls purchased matching heart lockets. Then we braved the cold wind yet again to Oxford Street where we went crazy at Lush! Keira and I are obsessed with Lush. She was wearing festive glittery Christmas antlers that the workers thought was so adorable she got a free bath bomb from them! After about an hour in the store and a big bag of goodies, we walked down Regent Street and took our dinner from Brew Dog to go (we were exhausted since we were up at 4:30am). I had to cave and take an Uber back to the hotel, which we all dozed off for a quick second before getting back to our hotel. We retired early because we were THAT tired!
- What we missed on my agenda for the day: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Christmas Markets. Eh, there's still tomorrow!

Day 5- I woke everyone up a little early so we could get started on our day! The plan was to head to head East towards Burrough Market which opened at 9:30am! I wanted to get there right at opening so we left a little earlier so I could grab coffee at Montmouth Coffee- delish! The Market was everything everyone talked about. Great shops, lots of free tasting! I came home with so much goodies I already knew I had to purchase another luggage to take everything home in. We had a quick bite at the market at one of the stalls that served this amazing mussels and a rice/chicken curry dish. OH My GAAAHHHH was it delicious! With full tummies, we had to head back into the main part of the city to Fortnum and Mason so I can have my much anticipated Afternoon Tea (bad idea to go with a full stomach!)  I purchased quite a few teas, and luckily they have an online ordering system- because I need to get more!  I'm so happy to have experienced this with Keira. Nocturnal baby was asleep during the whole thing- again! After tea, we decided to head over to London Tower to see the crown jewels. This was one thing Keira was excited about, but unfortunately we weren't able to get in because we got there too late. Apparently it takes about 3 hours to see everything and with the cost to get in, it wasn't worth it. The view of London Bridge was beautiful! We made it up to Keira by purchasing her very own crown at the gift shop and then heading back to Regent Street to Hamley's!  At this point, we had to wake Madison up so she didn't miss the 6 stories of toys! The girls came out pretty happy with all their stuff! Afterwards, we headed out, got some great photos of the different lit up streets, purchased a new luggage, and Uber'd it back to the hotel. I had every intention of heading back out, but again, the tiredness kicked in and our train ride to Paris was even earlier than the first!
-What we missed on my agenda for the day: Somerset House Ice Skating, London Bridge Towers, Harrod's, Christmas Markets. A second trip for Jack & I is now cultivating!

Day 6- Euro Star back to Paris. The train ride was much earlier than the first, no customs, and the train itself was very outdated. This train also made frequent stops- so took us an hour more to get back to Paris. Upon arriving, we took an Uber to Vienna House Dream Castle.  Disneyland is always so magical, and although the park itself was absolutely beautiful and spacious, I wasn't all that impressed. The parade was great- like all other parades. We rode the same rides we did back home, but they did't have a lot of rides to begin with. They did, however, have more play structures. Jack did ride  Indian Jones roller coaster which he said was amazing. Madison stayed awake for the entire duration we were at the park, which wasn't that long. Unfortunately, we decided to head out of the park and back to the outlets, a train stop away. After doing some shopping, we headed back to Disney Village to grab some souvenirs, then to the hotel. I crashed. Jack had to grab dinner (Paris does not do a lot of take out, by the way!) Our hotel was not offering room service that evening due to an oven breaking which made Jack's evening more difficult.
-What we missed on the agenda for the day: Nothing. What I would have done differently- stayed in London and skipped the park. But, the girls had a blast and I did get to say we went to Disneyland in Paris.

I wanted to arrive at the airport early to do some last minute shopping. Although I had planned it, there was a ton of traffic which took our shuttle an extra 30-45 minutes to get there. Once we arrived, I had to check in, do the VAT tax scans, go through security check point, and by this time, our plan was boarding.  They even do random security checks, so we heard Jack's name on the overhead system for him.  Mental note, when traveling from Paris De Gaulle, give yourself an extra 4 hours!

Overall, the trip with the girls was amazing. Madison may not remember this, but I know Keira will remember parts of it, and Jack and I, of course, will remember it all!  It was difficult getting around the Metro with a stroller, but after awhile, we got used to it! Would I go back? Most definitely! With the kids? Sure, why not!

Europe in 7 days with 2 kids Part I

Sounds kind of crazy! But yes, I am that person.  The hubs granted me a bucket wish list for my 40th birthday this year- and I chose Paris & London. Originally we were going to travel alone, but with the in-laws leaving for their own vacation- we had to take them with.

We flew Norwegian Air for the first time roundtrip. Scored killer tickets at a little over $500/person! Booked our hotels and planned for two weeks before our trip. I scoured Pinterest, read blog posts- you name it! I had to make sure our 7 days was jam packed with must-do's!

We arrived at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris. Very easy to navigate the airport and getting into the city.  Our biggest mistake- take the metro when you have 2 luggages, 2 hand-carry's, a 6 year old sleepy child and a 3 year old in a stroller.  I read taking an Uber or a Taxi from the airport into the city was massively expensive and I didn't want my first use of my travel funds to be transportation! So, we did like the locals do- we took the metro and it was a bi-atch! One hour metro train ride, 3 different stops, numerous stairs- in the rain mind you- we finally got to our hotel! We stayed at the Hotel Mercure Paris Gare Montparnasse which is located in the 14th arrondissement. Thankfully the rainy walk from outside the Metro to the hotel only took literally less than 5 minutes. After dropping our bags in the room, using the bathrooms, we headed right out. I didn't want to miss a moment we were in Paris!

First stop- Eiffel Tower. Although it was freezing cold (even more so if you are coming from California!) and the rain was off/on, we finally made it to the famous Eiffel Tower. Muddy walkways and a now sleeping Madison (our 3 year old), it was definitely one of the most breath taking sites I've ever seen in my life (except for my girls of course)! We walked by the Seine River towards Avenue des Champs d'Elysees. If you are using Google Maps, make sure you have really good coverage! Ours was so spotty that was go redirected so many times. What turned out to be a 20 minute walk, ended up being almost 45 minutes! My hopes was to make it to the Arc De Triomphe, but that didn't happen. We were so hungry and not a lot of Paris shops are open on a Sunday night! We found this quaint Pizza place right on the avenue and then we headed home (Metro Ride from here about 10 minutes).  The bed called my name- but I had 2 jet-lagged girls. I guess when in Paris- who needs sleep, right?
-What did we miss on our agenda for the day: Arc de Triomphe

First full day (day 2)- I purchased the Hop On/Hop Off tour before leaving for our trip via TripAdvisor. This allowed us to not only get into the majority of the museums and attractions in Paris, but FREE Metro rides within Paris Central, a hop on/hop off bus tour AND a FREE Bateaux Parisian boat ride!  We went to the Louvre- which was beautiful and HUGE and definitely not stroller friendly.  I allotted 2-3 hours here. Barely got to see one section. We decided to see what Keira (our 6 year old) really wanted to see and aim for that. I didn't even get to see the Mona Lisa. Maybe a loss? Nah. Getting really hungry from all the walking, I planned on grabbing lunch at the fantastic little restaurant called Bistrot Victoires I had found when researching. They served Duck Confit (which the hubs said was magnificent) and I shared a roasted chicken dish with the girls (super good!) Both dishes were excellent, amount was good and the pricing was excellent! Definitely visit again if I ever go back! After lunch, we got back onto the bus tour and made our way to Notre Dame Cathedral. I envisioned Quasi hanging on the rooftops as we waited to make our way inside. Across the street from the cathedral are cute little souvenir shops, restaurants and a cute little bookstore called Shakespeare and Company. Obviously I had to go in as this is one of the places I also researched. I imagined leather bound, first edition books. Yeah- no. It's a regular bookstore. Great selection but honestly, I could have found it cheaper on Amazon. Last stop on our first official day in Paris? Arc De Triomphe. The goal was to make it to the top since we didn't at the Eiffel. That meant climbing 284 steps! For someone that has not worked out in a very long time and endurance levels at almost zero? LIFT BABY! Thankfully the hubs was wearing Madison and she had asked if we needed the lift- I quickly agreed! The view was magnificent! The city lights and the view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower to your right was spectacular. Got some great videos and photos of us 3 (Madison became nocturnal!) We finally walked down the Avenue and I was able to do some shopping (found my Eiffel Tower destination bag at Longchamp!) and grab our first box of Pierre Herme macarons! Took the Metro back to the hotel with a quick stop to the Monoprix (a hundred euros later) for some random items. Successful day!
-What we missed on our agenda for the day: Sacre Coure, Saint Chapelle, Ponts de Arts

Last full day in Paris (day 3)- One thing I love about the hubs, he knows me so well! He found one of THE BEST outlets in Paris, La Vallee Village Outlet. 1 hour train ride from our hotel, right near Disneyland. Although we were going to be at the Park on Friday, the outlets close at 7pm and I didn't want to chance not being able to make it in time! I would say one of the best outlets hands down.  I could have a sign on my forehead that said TAKE MY MONEY NOW! Prada, Burberry, Longchamp did not disappoint. After a quick detour from taking the wrong train, it was fairly easy to get to. Right when you get out of the Metro, you walk through this HUGE mall and at the very end is the outside outlet mall. Of course, Keira had to stop into Claire's to get something for herself. Madison, again, was nocturnal. We spent half the morning here and made our way back to the hotel to drop off the goods. The rest of the time we spent walking along the Eiffel Tower and because Madison was awake (YAY!), girls got to ride on the carousel that overlooked the Eiffel Tower. It was pretty magical. We walked along the Seine River to our one hour boat tour. The city is beautiful in the evening with all the lights. Girls got to sit on top outside for a few minutes but it was so windy and cold, we stayed at the bottom most of the time. After the boat tour, it was getting so late, rain was coming down, so we grabbed dinner and headed back to the hotel to get ready for our train ride into London.
NOTE- When shopping, take your passport or at least have a picture of it ready. The shops need this to issue you a VAT TAX refund form.

Part II- Euro Star and London - Read it here!

Let's Start Here...

I know, another blog. With so many other blogs out there, why should I take the time to start one? Great question!I'm documenting. I'm telling our story so that one day my family and I can look back and relive these wonderful moments we shared.  Life is full of ups and downs, turmoil and heartache. But it is also full of an abundance of grace, beauty and love.  With each writing I do, I hope to leave a little bit of "us" in all these memories we share together.

I'm going to document about everyday life. Struggles, frustration, happiness, and the mundane. I was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 at the age of 37. Having 2 little girls at home, one that is now on her own (but still living at home), and an amazing husband, I realized that life is just too short to sweat the small stuff. I'm trying to live in the moment, build memories and experiences with my girls, but also note the struggles we have just as regular 'ol people.

I hope whoever reads this enjoys the little stories I share and gets a glimpse of someone who is just trying to live their best life!

When you look at a field of dandelions, you can either see a hundred weeds, or a hundred wishes...
